White House, April 2013: It’s rare that you catch a politician in a candid moment, let alone the President of the United States. At a White House ceremony honoring the National Teacher of the Year, President Obama reacts to someone in the audience after giving his prepared remarks and presenting the award to Jeff Charbonneau of Washington State.
I was fortunate to serve as a member of the selection committee for the nation’s top teacher for 10 of the 12 years I worked at the National School Boards Association. The winner is selected following an arduous process that involves whittling down the 56 state and U.S. territory winners to four finalists, then meeting and picking the eventual winner over a two-day period in early March.
The best part, at least for me, is the White House recognition ceremony for all of the state teachers and the winner. It’s not every day that you get to see such a collection of outstanding educators, or get a chance to capture the president in such a good mood.
